Occasionally the leak may come from an old and worn out drain that is beyond repair. If the faucet isn t leaking fill the sink with water then let it drain and watch for water dripping from the p trap assembly as the water flows. To identify where the leak is coming from just plug your sink with the drains cover. Turn on the faucet and leave open allowing the remaining water in the line to empty into the sink.

If the leak is coming from a pressurized water hose spray will probably be immediately apparent. Go under the cabinet with a flashlight and inspect the faucet hoses. Leave the water in place and check beneath the sink to see whether any is escaping. Fix a leaky faucet shut off the water twist the valve under your sink to turn off the water supply valve or valves.

Plug the drain with the stopper and turn on the faucet until the basin is filled with about an inch of water. However the putty can be too thin to start with or it might dry out over time. Use locking or adjustable pliers to reach next to the drain and turn the nut hopefully sealing off the leak. A drain is usually sealed with plumber s putty to prevent further leaks.

In some cases the leak may not be simply from a faulty connection but from a corroded p trap which is the bent section in a pipe that keeps the nasty gasses from returning back up the pipe. If the leak is coming from a drain line however you might not notice it until you use the sink. A kitchen sink faucet leaking underneath your cabinets or a dripping drain pipe is certainly annoying but being able to spot the leak early helps prevent serious damage. You may see water dripping or spraying from a faucet connection and if so there s your leak.
